FEAST OF ST. PETER & PAUL

FEAST OF ST. PETER & PAUL

 St. Peter

Peter, our first pope, was a fisherman from Galilee. Jesus called him to follow him, "I will make you fishers of men." Peter was a simple, hard-working. He was generous, honest and very close to Jesus. This great apostle's name was Simon, but Jesus changed it to Peter, which means "rock". "You are Peter," said Jesus, "and upon this rock I will build my Church." Peter is the leader of the apostles.

When Jesus was arrested, Peter fears. That's when he committed the sin of denying Christ three times. The fear of the safety of themselves mastered. However, Peter regretted his actions wholeheartedly. He mengangisi denial throughout his life. Jesus forgave Peter. After His resurrection, He asked Peter three times, "Do you love me?" Peter answered, "Lord, thou knowest all things, thou knowest that I love thee." Indeed, Jesus did know! Peter's right. With gentle Jesus said, "Feed my sheep." Jesus told Peter to take care of his Church, for he will ascend to heaven. Jesus appointed Peter as the leader of his followers.

Peter eventually go and live in Rome. Rome is the center of the whole Roman Empire. There, Peter converted many people. When the cruel persecution against Christians began, the people begged Peter to leave Rome and save themselves. According to tradition, he is currently on his way to leave Rome when he met Jesus on the road. Peter asked Him, "Lord where are you want to go?" Jesus answered, "I have come to be crucified a second time." Then St. Peter turned around and returned to Rome. He understands that the vision meant that he had to suffer and die for Jesus. Soon Peter was arrested and sentenced to death. Because he was not a Roman citizen, just like Jesus, he can be crucified. This time he did not deny Christ. This time he was ready to die for him. Peter asked to be crucified head downwards, because he was not worthy to suffer like Jesus. The Roman soldiers did not find this unusual, because slaves were crucified in this manner. St. St. Peter was martyred on Vatican Hill about 67 years. Fourth century, Emperor Constantine built a large church over the sacred place. Archeological discoveries have recently affirmed the historical narrative.

St. Paul

Paul was a great apostle who used to persecute Christians. Then he repented. We celebrate the conversion of St.. Paul on January 25. At the time of his conversion, Jesus said: "I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name." St. Paul is really very, very loving Jesus, the evidence, it becomes a duplicate of our Savior lives. Throughout his life, in so many mission trips, St. Paul faced many challenges and dangers. He was whipped, stoned, shipwrecked, and lost at sea. Often and repeatedly he hunger, thirst and cold. Nevertheless, he always firmly believed in God. Deterrent he never preached. "Love Jesus encourages me," he said. As a reward, God gave him comfort and joy abound in enduring suffering.

We can read the story of marvelous adventures for Christ in the book of Acts, written by St. Luke, beginning with chapter nine. However, a story written by St. Luke ended when Paul arrived in Rome. He is under house arrest, awaiting trial by the Emperor Nero. A well-known Christian writer from the time of the early church, Tertullian, tells us that Paul was released after his first trial. But then, he was thrown back in jail. This time, he was sentenced to death. He died around the year 67, during the terrible persecution of Christians in the reign of Emperor Nero.

Paul referred to himself as an apostle of the Gentiles. He mewartakaan gospel to the Gentiles. That makes it famous around the world. Therefore Paul, we too, accept the Christian faith.

Hopefully, our hearts filled with joy as we honor these two great apostles: Peter, the leader of our faith, and Paul, the brave messenger.
