PREPARING GOD'S WAY

PREPARING GOD'S WAY
BY:  P. LEO SIPAHUTAR, OFMCAP

When Israel dumped in Babylon, in the land, the prophet Isaiah proclaimed that the Lord will come liberate them and drove them back to the homeland: "See, the Lord God, He comes with strength and with His hands He ruled" (Isa. 40: 10a). But Israel needs to be prepared to greet him by providing a way for Him. Roads should be leveled, swamped valley, hill brought low, the crooked straightened, which berlekak-curves flattened. Of course Isaiah did not mean to pave the way in the desert Babylon, because there has been no bulldozer at that time. Which meant Isaiah is the heart of Israel, hilly heart arrogant, who expect to save themselves; berlembah heart despair without being sure there is hope; crooked heart deceptive cheating, dirty notched heart full of hypocrisy. Isaiah confirms that the Lord requires purification and cleansing the liver.
The same thing John the Baptist proclaimed when he proclaims the coming of Jesus Christ the Messiah: "Prepare the way for the Lord, make His paths straight" (Mk 1: 3b). "After me will come one who is more powerful than I ... He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit" (Mark 1: 8b). John persuaded the people to repent, regret arrogance, deception and hypocrisy. One should admit their crimes before the people and God, and was baptized in the Jordan River as a sign of repentance and forgiveness.
In this Advent Church proclaims to us that the Lord will come to visit us. But we can only feel and appreciate coming, if we are willing to cleanse our hearts, if we repent, acknowledge and regret our filthiness and wickedness. Only if we are willing mengobah perverse way we live, mengobah views and our thoughts are wrong, then we see the coming of the Lord. That is the essence of true repentance. Repentance means to straighten the direction of life back to what God wants for the sake of our happiness. Repentance also means leaving anything perceived as a barrier, a barrier to our progress towards happiness with God. In such conversion hearts, minds and actions can be fused to more closely connected with God that will equip our life and happiness.
